Simply put, they are buttons/parts made to resemble real pearls.
They give a feminine impression, so they are also suited to occasion wear and ladies' styles, but for example, simply using pearl buttons on colorful high-gauge knitwear changes the look to a softer impression that is not too casual.

Even when we simply say pearl buttons, there are several types of materials used, and features such as whether dyeing is possible vary depending on the material.
Below, we introduce the representative materials used for pearl buttons.
This may be a material notation used only by IRIS, but it is a urea-based material processed to resemble the color and shape of a pearl.
Because it is given a pearly look with a coating, if the coating peels off, the base material may show through.
It is also not a dyeable material.
This is a resin button based on urea. It is characterized by excellent heat resistance and light resistance.
Rather than being coated, the material's own color has a pearly appearance. (Not dyeable)
As a caution, urea resin contains formaldehyde, so it cannot be used for clothing for infants and toddlers under 2 years old.
Also, long soaking washes (overnight) can soften the button and cause cracking or chipping.
Nylon resin generally has the characteristic of being highly dyeable.
It is also used for combination products that incorporate plated parts and other components, taking advantage of the elasticity of the resin.
Comparing the photos, the IP and UF materials feel closer to real pearls than the PA material products.
However, the appeal of PA material lies in the dyeability of the pearl section and combinations with different materials that make use of its elasticity.
I think that if you broadly understand the characteristics of each material, it will be easier to choose the right product for your purpose.
Because of their characteristics, pearl buttons are basically shank buttons in shape.
As the name suggests, it is a button with a shank. The thread and buttonhole are not visible from the front, and it is a shape often used for highly decorative buttons such as metal buttons.
Round shank button
The shank shape is rounded.
Square shank button
The shank shape is angular.
Tunnel shank (tunnel hole) button
This is a button with a tunnel-like hole in part of the button shape.
Regarding applications, it cannot be said in general, but for knit products, tunnel shank buttons seem to be used often for durability reasons.
