Hello everyone, it's Jane again!
In recent years, being eco-friendly has become a big trend in the fashion industry. Luxury brands are pledging to stop using genuine leather, demand for recycled polyester textile is on the rise, and more. At all the exhibitions I went to, sustainable items were the main focus. Among young Vietnamese, the latest fashion trend is natural indigo dyeing.
I went to the Fashion World exhibition last week, and the Sustainable EXPO was held next to it.
Of course, indigo dyeing is not new. Indigo dyeing is said to have been first invented in Peru in 6300 BC. However, most of the indigo dye produced today is man-made, accounting for several thousand tons each year. Unlike synthetic indigo, natural indigo is a sustainable dye. After the pigments are extracted, the plant residue is composted and used as fertilizer, and the water is reused to irrigate crops. In Vietnam, the technique of natural indigo dyeing is still used by various ethnic minorities. They are attracting young people who want a green lifestyle.
Recently featured in a magazine: A few young Vietnamese decided to quit their busy lives in big cities and go to the countryside to learn the art of natural indigo dyeing from ethnic minorities.
The Japanese indigo dyeing technique is very famous worldwide and, not surprisingly, it is also popular in Vietnam.
I didn't know there were so many documentaries about Japanese indigo dyeing on YouTube!
This is an indigo dyed work by a young Vietnamese person, and I think it's very cute and practical.
Of course, natural indigo dyeing is not the only environmentally friendly material. ApparelX has a variety of sustainable products on sale, so if you are interested, please take a look: ApparelX Sustainable
