What is Ventile/VENTILE? A waterproof and breathable textile with a long history!

Hello.
I'm Ozaki from the ApparelX trend blog.

There are many textiles in the world with various waterproof functions.

Recently, thanks to advances in technology, qualities such as water resistance and lightness have been improving more and more.

On the other hand, there are also waterproof natural-fiber textiles that were developed decades ago, and some still remain popular today.

This time, we're introducing Ventile, one of the most popular among them!

What is Ventile?

Ventile is an ultra-high-density textile made from 100% cotton, yet with extremely high water resistance.

It was originally developed for the British Royal Air Force and has a history of being used as protective outerwear.

Benefits

Water resistance, wind resistance, and breathability

These three points are the basic features and advantages of Ventile.

The reason it can offer high water resistance despite being 100% cotton lies in its weave density.

Because it is woven with an extremely high number of picks at ultra-high density, it blocks water droplets from the outside and provides excellent water resistance.

By the same principle, it also blocks wind, so it has wind-resistant properties as well.

At the same time, water vapor from the inside can pass between the fibers, so it is breathable and less likely to get stuffy.

This is something that cannot be achieved with ordinary synthetic fibers or water-repellent coatings, so it can be said to be a unique feature of Ventile.

The texture unique to cotton

When you think of waterproof textiles, many are made from synthetic fibers such as nylon, but as mentioned above, Ventile is 100% cotton.

Because it is a natural fiber, it has a texture that synthetic fibers do not. In addition, because ultra-fine yarn is woven at very high density, it has a more premium feel than ordinary cotton textile.

Does it convey a sense of luxury if you imagine something like gabardine used for trench coats from British luxury brands?

It is a material that has the unique texture of natural fibers, while also feeling luxurious and looking excellent.

Drawbacks

Weight

As mentioned above, Ventile has a very high number of picks, so it is heavier than waterproof textiles made from synthetic fibers.

However, there are silhouettes that can only be expressed with that weight, so I think it can also be seen as an advantage in terms of its substantial feel.

Price

This is unavoidable, but it is one of the more expensive waterproof textiles.

Ultra-fine yarn is premium, and since it is woven in greater quantities than usual, the price inevitably goes up.

Conversely, that means it is a highly refined textile with strong brand value.

Products listed on ApparelX

OS2300 Ventile 40/2 gabardine

A sturdy gabardine with substantial thickness. It also has a sheen, giving it a premium feel.

It is recommended not only for trench coats but also for outerwear.

OS2301 Ventile 60/2 gabardine

This is also gabardine, but compared with OS2300 it has a lower industry weight and a slightly more subdued sheen.

It seems suitable for a wider range of uses, including pants and jackets.

OS2302 Ventile 40/2 weather cloth

This is a plain-weave Ventile material.

Compared with gabardine, it is thinner and has a more naturally easy-to-wear look, so it can be used for a wide range of items from outerwear to pants.

OS2303 Ventile 60/2 weather cloth

This is the thinnest material among the Ventile items handled by ApparelX.

It is a versatile material that can be used for everything from jackets to shirts and other tops.

Finally

Thank you for reading to the end.

There are many waterproof textiles with high functionality, but there are not many that combine the texture and presence of Ventile.

That is what makes textiles and clothing so interesting: their appeal goes beyond just convenience and functionality.
