There are many trends in the apparel industry, but lately, partly due to the influence of social media, smaller trends have been appearing one after another.
(I do feel that the big trends across the industry are changing surprisingly slowly, though...)
Among them, the style I’m paying attention to is the western style, which is starting to be called cowboy core.
This time, I’d like to introduce cowboy core!
As the name suggests, cowboy core is a style that involves wearing items like those of cowboys and cowgirls.
That said, it is not a full western look like a so-called cowboy outfit; the mainstream approach is to incorporate just one western item,
or to mix it with a luxurious style.
The trend was sparked by American celebrities and musicians.
First, Pharrell Williams, who is also a musician and currently serves as Creative Director at Louis Vuitton, presented a style heavily influenced by cowboy and western elements in the brand’s 2024-25 fall/winter collection.
Global musician Beyoncé is also one of the people who pushed cowboy style forward.
She attended the Grammy Awards wearing a cowboy hat, and in March 2024 she released an album titled Cowboy Carter.
She is from Texas and has long been familiar with cowboy culture, including country music, making her an icon of this style.
In addition, top models such as Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian, and Kendall Jenner have also worn cowboy-style items,
making this a style that is becoming a major movement.
There are several western items used in cowboy core, and cowboy hats are the most representative.
As mentioned above, both Pharrell Williams and Beyoncé appeared wearing cowboy hats at collections and parties.
It’s a slight detour, but Pharrell Williams often wore hats with long brims about 10 years ago, and it gave the impression that that style has come back in a more refined form.
Western boots are also an iconic cowboy item. Before they became trendy, they probably did not attract much attention, but this boom has brought them back into the spotlight.
From Pharrell Williams’ Louis Vuitton to Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, and GANNI, western boots have been introduced by a wide range of brands.
When you think of cowboys, leather jackets and pants are also representative items.
Cowboys back then wore items made with real leather, but today, items made with faux leather and eco leather are also being incorporated.
Denim items are also essential to western style. Cowboys and cowgirls at the time wore denim as workwear.
