Definition and Overview

A seam label is a woven label attached by folding the label in half, exposing the folded edge to the outside and inserting both ends into the seam allowance. It is attached to the side seam, pocket opening, hem, center back, and similar areas to visually indicate the brand or line.

In general, its use differs from care tags or size tags sewn to the inside of garments. Seam labels are often placed where they can be seen from the outside, and are treated as part of the product design.

Position in the Product Process

During the planning stage, decide the logo content, text direction, ground color and text color, finished dimensions, and attachment position. On the pattern and specification sheet, clearly state the position relative to the stitch line, front and back, visible length, and the direction in which it will be sewn in.

After the label is made, it is supplied to the sewing factory and inserted during the sewing process after cutting, when joining the body or pockets. Since there are positions where post-attachment is difficult, it is important to confirm consistency with the sewing specifications in advance.

  • Confirm the logo data and text legibility.
  • Specify the attachment area and the direction visible from the front of the product.
  • Specify separately the dimensions that go into the seam allowance and the dimensions that remain outside.
  • Before mass production, confirm the position and appearance with a physical sample.

Key Points for Ordering and Specification Instructions

When ordering, organize the weave type, material, ground color, text color, finished width and length, fold position, cutting method, and required quantity. Fine text, thin lines, and multi-color patterns vary in reproducibility depending on the small size of the label, so do not judge from the data alone; confirm with a sample.

If the fabric to which it will be attached is lightweight, stretchy, or brushed, the thickness and stiffness of the label may affect comfort, seam waviness, and skin feel. Select the specification while sharing the application area and sewing method.

Quality Control and Precautions

During mass production, check the left-right and top-bottom orientation, attachment position, amount sewn in, and insufficient insertion into the seam. To prevent defects such as the label edge coming out of the seam, the logo facing the wrong side, or the display area being hidden, confirmation on the first production sample is effective.

For products intended to be washed or rubbed, also check the label itself for color fading, fraying, and fuzzing at the edges. In particular, when attaching it to a light-colored body fabric, evaluate the presence or absence of color transfer in line with the product conditions.

Differences from Similar Terms

The term woven label may refer broadly to labels that express text or patterns through weaving, while a seam label specifically refers mainly to the folded form inserted into a seam. Care label, on the other hand, is a label attached inside a garment for material and care information.

A hang tag is a paper tag attached to a product at the time of sale and is usually removed after purchase. A seam label is sewn into the product and remains as a brand identifier during wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are seam labels usually attached?

Typical locations are the side seam, hem, pocket opening, center back, and cuff. The placement is decided while considering the direction of the logo you want to show and how it appears when worn or folded. Whether the part can accommodate insertion into the seam is confirmed in advance through the pattern and sewing specifications.

What should be included in a seam label specification sheet?

Include the attachment area, front and back, logo direction, the dimension to extend out from the seam, the dimension to be sewn in, and the sewing location. Also indicate the finished dimensions and color of the label, and if possible, attach a drawing or physical sample that shows the installed state to reduce misunderstandings.

Are seam labels and woven labels the same?

Seam label is often used as a term for a type of woven label. However, woven labels also include those sewn flat and those attached at the neck. Seam label is a term that emphasizes the folded form inserted into a seam.
