Shank wrapping is a button-sewing method in which the button is kept slightly away from the textile and a thread shank of a suitable height is created with sewing thread. Finally, thread is wrapped around the base of the shank and tightened, which reduces button wobble and keeps the attachment position stable.

On thick plackets, facings, or layered sections, it becomes difficult to catch the fabric on the buttonhole side if there is not enough space between the button and the textile. Shank wrapping is done to accommodate this thickness.

Buttoned buttons such as two-hole, four-hole, and cat-eye types can be given a thread shank by slightly lifting the sewing thread passed through the holes and then wrapping it at the base.
