Water Repellent Zipper

Definition

A water repellent zipper is a zipper that is treated so water is less likely to enter between the interlocking elements and on the surface of the zipper tape, reducing the intrusion of rainwater and the like.

Definition and Overview

water repellent zipper are designed to prevent water from entering through the gaps between the teeth when closed. They are more effective at preventing water ingress than regular zipper and are used for openings on clothing and bags that are exposed to rain.

Although sometimes called a "waterproof zipper,"the zipper itself does not guarantee complete waterproofing. Water can enter through seams, around the slider, and in the open/closed state, so the overall waterproofing required for the product must be considered.

Structure and parts

In most cases, the surface of the coiled teeth is covered with a resin film or similar material, which covers the gaps between the teeth when the zipper is closed. The teeth refer to the elements that interlock in the zipper, and the slider refers to the part that opens and closes the teeth.

The basic components are the same as a regular zipper: teeth, slider, pull tab, zipper tape, top stop, bottom stop or opener. The water-resistant function is mainly due to the covering structure of the teeth, and therefore differs from the function of sealing the seams of the tape itself.

Types and specifications

water repellent zipper come in various types, including closed zipper with a closed bottom, open zipper that allow the left and right sides to be separated, and two way separator zippers that can be opened and closed from both the top and bottom. Choose the appropriate zipper based on its intended use and how it will be put on and taken off, such as front openings, pockets, or side openings.

The tooth size affects the required strength for the opening, appearance, conformity to curves, and slider size. The length is confirmed in the product specifications, including the top stop, bottom stop, or opening mechanism, in addition to the specifications of the finished product. The feasibility of custom orders and methods for length adjustment are also confirmed in advance.

  • For the front center and large pockets, we choose specifications that prioritize ease of opening and closing while also ensuring durability.
  • For curved sections and lightweight clothing, we check the balance between flexibility and tooth size.
  • In the open specification, you specify the shape of the opening mechanism and the left/right combination.

Main applications

It is used on the front openings and pockets of clothing that is prone to rain and splashes, such as rainwear, outdoor wear, sportswear, and work clothes. Its linear, glossy appearance is also utilized as a design element intended to enhance functionality.

In bags and pouches, zippers are used to prevent water from entering openings and pockets. However, for applications where the applications will be submerged in water or applications to strong water pressure, structural design and performance verification are necessary, including parts other than the zipper.

How to choose and points to note

Check that the tooth size and tape width are appropriate for the thickness, stiffness, and stretchability of the textile. A stiffer covering may feel less flexible than a regular coil zipper. For thin or highly elastic textile, it is important to consider sewing conditions to prevent waviness and opening/closing problems.

During sewing, care must be taken to prevent water from seeping through needle holes and tape from becoming distorted. For products requiring waterproofing of seams, consider additional treatment such as seam tape. Since repeated washing, friction, and bending can damage the surface coating, product testing will be conducted to check the appearance and ease of opening and closing.

When specifying and confirming the length, for closed specifications, the measurement should be from the top stop to the bottom stop, and for open specifications, from the top stop to the reference position of the opening mechanism, following the specifications and measurement standards of each manufacturer. It is important not to cut the wires during post-processing, as this can affect the watertight performance and end treatment.

FAQ

Are water repellent zipper and waterproof zipper the same thing?

While sometimes used interchangeably in the field, "waterproofing" generally refers to the function of preventing water from entering. A zipper alone can allow water to enter through the slider, ends, and seams. The required performance of a product is confirmed, including the structure of the finished product and the test conditions.

Can water repellent zipper be sewn in the same way as regular zipper?

While the basic sewing methods are the same, the stiffness of the covering surface and the stretch of the tape can cause waviness, misalignment of the stitching, and needle contact with the sewing teeth. During prototyping, including the textile and interlining, check the presser foot pressure and sewing position, and take care not to sew the sewing teeth into the fabric.

Where do you measure the length of a water repellent zipper?

Closed zipper are generally measured from the top stop to the bottom stop, while open zipper are measured from the top stop to the reference position of the opener. However, measurement standards may vary depending on the specifications and supplier. When ordering, please check the standard zipper length, not the total length.
