Definition and Overview

Easy Care is not a specific fiber name or weave construction name, but a functional term that describes how easy a material is to care for after washing. It is promoted as a combination of reduced wrinkling, quick drying, and good shape retention. W&W is used as an abbreviation for Wash and Wear and may refer to a property that makes garments easy to wear after washing.

Performance varies depending on the type of fiber, blend ratio, yarn and construction, processing such as resin treatment, and sewing specifications. Therefore, the Easy Care label alone does not necessarily mean that all of wrinkle recovery, quick-drying performance, and dimensional stability are present.

Features and Hand Feel

Textiles made with synthetic fibers such as polyester, and blended or union fabric with natural fibers, tend to be easier to dry after washing and less likely to retain wrinkles. Some materials also combine light weight, breathability, quick-drying performance, and stretch.

On the other hand, some materials may feel crisp or resilient, while others may not develop the fullness or aging changes typical of natural fibers. Since appearance, hand feel, sheerness, and drape vary by textile, check the actual material together with the performance label.

  • Reduces wrinkles after washing and helps reduce the need for ironing.
  • Some material designs are easier to dry quickly.
  • May combine shape retention, stretch, and quick-drying performance.

Main Applications

Used for garments that are washed frequently, such as shirts, blouses, pants, skirts, dresses, jackets, suits, and uniforms. For commuting, school, work, and sports applications, it is chosen to reduce care burden.

Lightweight materials with breathability and quick-drying performance are suitable for spring and summer shirt fabrics and pants fabrics. However, Easy Care is not a function limited to one season, and is also used for shirts, uniforms, and outerwear materials for fall and winter.

Selection and Handling Precautions

When planning, specify the required performance in detail. Decide whether wrinkle resistance, quick drying, stretch, breathability, or appearance is the priority, and confirm appearance, shrinkage rate, skew, and dimensional changes after washing tests under the product conditions. If household laundering is assumed, evaluation in line with the care label is required.

In sewing, adjust the needle, thread, feed amount, and pressing conditions according to the textile's stretch, slipperiness, and reaction to heat. Since hand feel and processing effects may change with heat or steam, carry out preliminary tests when applying fusible interfacing, pressing, or product washing.

Easy Care is similar to shrink-proof finishing, shape-retention finishing, and washable, but their meanings are not identical. Shrink-proof finishing mainly indicates suppression of shrinkage, shape-retention finishing mainly indicates resistance to wrinkling and shape change, and washable mainly indicates suitability for home laundering, while Easy Care refers to the overall ease of care that can include all of these.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Easy Care materials not need ironing?

Not necessarily. The way wrinkles remain depends on the washing method, spin-drying time, drying method, and the garment's sewing specifications. In some cases, hanging the garment after washing while shaping it can reduce care effort, but collars and front plackets may still require finishing with an iron.

What is the difference between Easy Care and shape-retention finishing?

Easy Care is a broad term for ease of care after washing. Shape-retention finishing refers to processing and performance that help keep wrinkles, pleats, and the overall shape of the appearance intact. Some Easy Care materials may not have shape-retention finishing applied.

Do Easy Care textiles still need shrinkage checks?

Yes. Shrinkage and dimensional changes vary depending on the fiber, blend ratio, construction, finishing, and washing conditions. In particular, blended products with natural fibers, specifications that include product washing, and areas using interfacing should be checked with washing and drying tests under the same conditions as mass production.
