Definition and Overview

Cool to the touch is a property in which heat moves from the skin to the textile immediately after contact, making it feel cool. It is imparted by combining the type of fiber, yarn and weave or knit structure, textile density, surface texture, and post-processing. It is not the name of a textile category itself, so it is used for both woven fabrics and knits.

It is a characteristic that makes the material feel cool at the moment of contact, and it does not necessarily mean it lowers body temperature throughout wear. Resistance to stuffiness inside clothing and the feeling of heat are also affected by moisture absorption, quick-drying performance, breathability, and garment ease.

Features

In many cases, the surface is smooth, does not cling to the skin, and has a dry, crisp hand. High-density woven fabrics may have a firm feel, while knits may also combine drape and stretch. You cannot judge whether a material is cool to the touch, or to what extent, by appearance alone.

The feeling of coolness changes depending on the contact area with the skin, moisture level, room temperature, and the wearer’s perception. Fabrics with moisture absorption, quick-drying performance, and breathability are more likely to contribute to comfort in summer, but these are separate properties from cool to the touch.

  • Cool to the touch: a property that feels cool because heat moves away at the moment of contact.
  • Moisture-absorbing, quick-drying: a property that absorbs and spreads sweat and other moisture to dry more easily.
  • Heat shielding: a property that suppresses heat intrusion from sunlight and other sources.

Main Applications

It is used for spring and summer T-shirts, shirts, blouses, dresses, pants, skirts, innerwear, nightwear, and more. It is especially effective in items that have a large area in direct contact with the skin.

In sportswear and uniforms, cool to the touch is sometimes combined with moisture absorption and quick-drying, stretch, and breathability. It is important to separate the required performance for the intended use and not judge wearing comfort based only on cool to the touch.

Selection and Handling Notes

When planning, check the actual hand feel while selecting the fiber blend ratio, structure, fabric weight, thickness, sheerness, stretch, and moisture absorption and quick-drying performance to suit the intended use. The method of displaying cooling performance and the test conditions differ by fabric, so when comparing values, confirm whether the conditions are the same.

Shrinkage and skew are not the cool-to-the-touch property itself; they are mainly caused by fiber properties, fabric structure, and finishing. Before mass production, conduct wash tests to confirm shrinkage rate, appearance changes, hand feel, and durability of the function, and handle the fabric according to the care label.

Smooth lightweight fabrics and highly stretchable knits may shift during cutting, or may show puckering or waviness during sewing. Align the grainline, match the needle, thread, and differential feed to the fabric, and perform a test stitch before sewing.

Differences from Similar Terms

Moisture absorption and quick-drying is a function that handles sweat and helps it dry more easily, and its evaluation target differs from the initial coolness of cool to the touch. Some fabrics have both properties, while others have only one.

Heat shielding mainly blocks heat from sunlight and suppresses heat from entering the clothing. Cool to the touch is a property related to heat transfer between the skin and the fabric, and it should be considered separately from the performance needed for protection from sunlight outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a cool-to-the-touch fabric cool the whole time you wear it?

Cool to the touch is mainly a property related to the coolness felt the moment the skin touches the fabric. Comfort while wearing it is also affected by how easily sweat dries, breathability, garment ease, temperature, and humidity. For summer items, it is also a good idea to check moisture absorption and quick-drying performance and breathability as needed.

Does the cool-to-the-touch function weaken after washing?

It depends on how the performance is imparted. The way a property changes after washing is not the same for a characteristic created by the fiber or structure and one created by post-processing. Before adoption, confirm with the fabric supplier the hand feel after washing, dimensional changes, and the basis for the functional claims, and test under practical conditions.
